HOmeopathy for infant colic

​Infant colic is a common problem that affects up to 20% of babies. It is characterized by prolonged crying and fussiness that occurs in the evening or at night. Often times the only thing that soothes your little one is constant motion.  Let’s have a show of hands who has ever found themselves pacing the floors with their baby.  Definitely me!  Up and down the stairs was the only way to soothe my eldest at one point!  
Homeopathy is a natural form of medicine that can be used to help relieve the symptoms of infant colic.  I am often asked whether homeopathy can be used for small humans and it absolutely can.  Homeopathy is safe, gentle & effective for everyone, from the very young to the very old. 
There are many different homeopathic remedies that can be used to help relieve the symptoms of infant colic. The most common remedies include:
  • Chamomilla: This remedy is for babies who are irritable and cry a lot. They may be red in the face and have hot, sweaty skin.
  • Colocynthis: This remedy is for babies who have severe abdominal pain. The pain is often cramping and stabbing, and it may be relieved by applying pressure to the abdomen.  YOu can often see these babies pull their knees up towards their abdomen.  
  • Dioscorea - These babies will arch their backs to try to get relief.  They may burp or pass wind also.  
  • Magnesia phosphorica: This remedy is for babies who have gas and bloating. They may be restless and have difficulty sleeping.
  • Nux vomica: This remedy is for babies who are fussy after eating. They may be irritable and have a strong desire to be rocked or carried.

There are also some practical things you can do to help your baby:
  • Hold your baby close. The warmth and comfort of your body can help to soothe your baby. 
  • Swaddle your baby. Swaddling can help to create a sense of security and can also help to reduce movement, which can contribute to gas and discomfort.
  • Use a pacifier. Sucking can help to relieve gas and soothe your baby.
  • Give your baby a warm bath. The warm water can help to relax your baby and can also help to reduce gas.
  • Try different feeding positions. Sometimes changing the feeding position can help to reduce gas and discomfort.
  • Talk to your doctor. If your baby's colic is severe or does not improve after a few weeks, talk to your doctor. There may be an underlying medical condition that needs to be treated.
