Aconite Sudden, intense earache that may have been triggered by cold winds. Worse around midnight. The external ear will be red and hot. The child will be restless. May appear inflamed. Belladonna Sudden ear inflammation with redness of ear and perhaps face. May also be accompanied by high fever with delirium/dilated pupils. Throbbing pains in the ear. May come on after getting hair wet or having a haircut. Usually, right side affected. The child will want to avoid chewing. Chamomilla Extremely sharp unbearable pains. The child will be stroppy and will not want to be touched. May ask for things and then throw them away. The ear and cheek may be red, especially if teething also. Worse from 9pm to midnight. The child will hold ear. Chamomilla may allow the infection to drain away painlessly (follow with Silica to ensure all infection discharged and then Calendula twice daily for two days to assist with healing of eardrum). Ferr Phos For use in the first stages of inflammation. Pale and flushed by turns. If given soon enough this can halt an ear infection’s progression. Hepar Sulph Extremely painful, the child will not be likely to ask for help. Chilly and sensitive to noise and draughts. Irritable and will not want to be touched. Glands in the neck may also be swollen. Usually right sided. The child will not ask for help. Pulsatilla Mostly, but not always, left sided. There will be the sensation of a blocked ear with aching and sharp pains and sometimes with a crawling sensation. The external ear will be red and hot. May be described as pressure on the ear. The child will be tearful, wanting help. On occasion, giving Pulsatilla will progress case to a Chamomilla picture. Do not give Chamomilla unless the child has changed to being demanding and impatient as Chamomilla can antidote Pulsatilla. Silica Itching and soreness in the inner ear. Will want to bore finger into ear or press on it. Ear feels plugged and may pop with yawning. Lacking in energy and subdued. This can sometimes be confused with Pulsatilla. Can be uncharacteristically uncooperative. Usually left sided and develops slowly. The patient needs lots of tolerant handling. Check for heat behind the ear and for matter inside. If you are not seeing much improvement, check the symptoms again to make sure you are using the most appropriate remedy.
