Whether you have suffered earaches yourself in the past or you have a child that suffers from them, I’m sure you agree that this is a most unpleasant experience.
Antibiotics are generally the conventional medical approach, however, antibiotics are not effective in all cases of earache/infection[1].

Some practical advice for ear infections is to warm some olive oil and put a few drops into the affected ear.  This works to soothe the ache for several reasons:
  • Helps to loosen & clear excess wax that can cause pain.
  • Contains anti-bacterial & anti-viral agents that help fight infection
  • Provides a barrier to prevent further getting into the already irritated ear.
Try to keep the ear dry as eater may further irritate the ear.

If you would like to discuss constitutional treatments for earache or to discuss building your remedy kit just get in touch. www.solashomeopathy.com/contact.html

Aconite

Worse around midnight.
The external ear will be red and hot.

Belladonna
Sudden ear inflammation with redness of ear and perhaps face.
May also be accompanied by high fever with delirium/dilated pupils.
Throbbing pains in the ear.

Usually, right side affected.
The child will want to avoid chewing.

Chamomilla
Extremely sharp unbearable pains.
The child will be stroppy and will not want to be touched.
May ask for things and then throw them away.
The ear and cheek may be red, especially if teething also.
Worse from 9pm to midnight.
The child will hold ear.
Chamomilla may allow the infection to drain away painlessly (follow with Silica to ensure all infection discharged and then Calendula twice daily for two days to assist with healing of eardrum).

Ferr Phos
For use in the first stages of inflammation.
Pale and flushed by turns.
If given soon enough this can halt an ear infection’s progression.

Hepar Sulph
Extremely painful, the child will not be likely to ask for help.
Chilly and sensitive to noise and draughts.
Irritable and will not want to be touched.
Glands in the neck may also be swollen.

Pulsatilla
Mostly, but not always, left sided.
There will be the sensation of a blocked ear with aching and sharp pains and sometimes with a crawling sensation.
The external ear will be red and hot.
May be described as pressure on the ear.
The child will be tearful, wanting help.

On occasion, giving Pulsatilla will progress case to a Chamomilla picture. Do not give Chamomilla unless the child has changed to being demanding and impatient as Chamomilla can antidote Pulsatilla.

Silica
Itching and soreness in the inner ear.
Will want to bore finger into ear or press on it.
Ear feels plugged and may pop with yawning.
Lacking in energy and subdued.
This can sometimes be confused with Pulsatilla.
Can be uncharacteristically uncooperative.
Usually left sided and develops slowly.
The patient needs lots of tolerant handling.
Check for heat behind the ear and for matter inside.

If you are not seeing much improvement, check the symptoms again to make sure you are using the most appropriate remedy.
