A sore throat is any kind of discomfort, pain or scratchy sensation in the throat. Many of us will experience this at one point or another, sometimes at the start of a cold or other times as a more serious throat infection. We all know how painful and uncomfortable it can be, so nothing is worse then if your child has these same symptoms. Younger children, in particular, find it difficult to manage the discomfort of a sore throat which can make it equally distressing for the parent.
Many GPs now are adopting a wait-and-see approach in an effort to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria in addition to the potential side effects of these drugs such as skin rashes, diarrhea, vomiting etc.(1). In many cases, these infections will resolve themselves in a few days. In order to ease the pain of a sore throat, there are a number of remedies you can use which I have listed below. Belladonna Particularly useful for early stages of tonsillitis. Use for sudden onset of sore throat with swelling and redness. There may also be a high fever. Child may lack thirst. Right tonsil may be red and hot with swelling. Aconite For sore throats that come on suddenly after exposure to cold winds. Throat will be dry, red and painful and may be accompanied with a fever. Child may be restless and fearful. There may also be a burning/pricking sensation that extends to the ears. Has to keep swallowing at first but will become difficult with swelling. Apis Sore throat accompanied usually by a high fever and thirstlessness. Throat and tongue feels and looks swollen. Child may complain of stinging/burning pains. They prefer a cool room. Will want cold water to soothe throat. Hepar Sulph This is good for a more developed sore throat with extreme pains that may travel up to the ears. It may feel like there is a splinter or sharp object lodged in the throat. Throat may be sensitive to touch from the outside. Child will feel better for hot drinks. Child may be chilly and will be irritable. Will want to be covered. Symptoms mostly worse on right side. May wish to be left alone. Reduced appetite. Ferr Phos Characterised by swollen, raw tonsils with climbing fever. Particularly useful in early stages for halting progression of a sore throat. Alternating pallor and flushing. Swallowing is painful. Generally weak and sensitive. Rhus Tox Tonsils will be swollen with yellow matter exuding from both sides. Child will be restless and anxious. Likely to feel stiff, achy and irritable after resting. This may have been triggered by getting wet and chilly. Sulpher Can be useful when indicated remedies do nothing. Give a single dose of 30c and wait. If there is no change, call your homeopath These are only a few of hundreds of remedies that can be used to treat throat complaints, however they have a strong affinity for this area and would be used regularly to treat sore throats & tonsillitis. Recurrent sore throat indicates a weakened immune system. In such cases, constitutional treatment by a professional homeopath is highly recommended. ____________________________________________________________________________ (1) https://www.drugs.com/article/antibiotic-sideeffects-allergies-reactions.html
