What is a concussion? Concussion, also known as mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is typically defined as a head injury with a temporary loss of brain function.
Your brain is made of soft tissue which is cushioned by spinal fluid and encased by the skull. You get a concussion when the brain is moved violently in the skull. This usually happens as a result of an accident. Symptoms may include headache, trouble with thinking, memory or concentration, nausea, blurry vision, sleep disturbances, or mood changes. Anyone can experience a concussion at any time. It's not just sports people and active children who are the subjects of this type of injury. Though they do experience their fair share too! Some of us will simply be in the wrong place at the wrong time and may end up with a bump to the head. It can be a scary experience, for both the patient and those in attendance, be they parents, coaches, teachers etc. In all cases where you suspect a concussion you must seek medical attention, particularly of someone has been knocked unconscious or is vomiting following a blow to the head. Throrough checks must be carried out to ensure that there is nothing more severe at play. Whilst on the way to the hospital, you can be treating this with Homeopathy. Here are some of the remedies you should use. Definitely carry these with you if you are regularly on the sidelines supporting a child or loved one. Arnica I can't stress enough how effective this remedy is, not only for concussion, but for any form of physical trauma or shock. Use whatever potency you have, but if you happen to have a 200c, I would recommend it. Repeat the remedy if you can see it had improved but deteriorated again. Belladonnna In many cases after a blow to the head there will be a headache. This will range in intensity and sensation from person to person. If it is intense and throbbing, give belladonna. Nat sulph This remedy is one I always reach for following a head injury. As with any head injury, use Arnica as your first port of call. After the patient has been checked by a medical professional I would give Nat Sulph 200c in a split dose (that is to say, one pillule that night, one the following morning and one the following night, approximately 12 hours between doses). This supports the brain in healing and recovery following a bang. Hypericum On occasion, depending on the nature of the injury, you may have whiplash also. Hypericum is the #1 remedy for the nerves and can be used to ease the pain of this condition. You may also have other aches and pains, pulled muscles, injured ligaments or tendons. I find that using a combination of Rhus Tox and Ruta Grav will gently ease these aches. If you have had a concussion and would like to chat about supporting your healing then get in touch with us.
