![]() Whether you are heading to the dentist for a routine check or are having some work done, it can be a daunting time. Here we’ll take a look at some tooth-centred conditions and how homeopathy can help to overcome them. Fear of the Dentist For some, it’s an irrational fear with no basis in experience. For others, it may stem from a traumatic trip to the dentist some time in the past. Heading to get your pearly whites checked should be a dull, routine event. However, nerves can sometimes get the better of us and result in us putting off a visit until it’s too late. Here are some of the top remedies to use if you are feeling a little anxious: Aconite This is one of the top remedies for fright & shock. There will be a lot of fear of the dentist/treatment when this remedy is required. Argentum Nit There will be a lot of agitation with the anticipation of going to the dentist. Gelsemium Paralysed with fear at the thought of going to the dentist. Take the indicated remedy as soon as symptoms start to occur in the run up to the appointment and repeat as necessary. This should take the fear out of the appointment and allow you to get your check up in peace! Other Issues Even with rigorous dental care at home, problems will arise from time to time, such as: Cavities (extractions, fillings) Abscesses Gum Disease Broken or Chipped Teeth Sensitive Teeth Referred Pain Let’s have a look at these one by one. Cavities Prevention is better than cure. It goes without saying that we all should eat less sugar, brush & floss twice daily, avoid certain drinks etc. however, human nature being as it is, we don’t. If you are lucky enough to catch your cavity when it is still quite small, you can turn to tissue salts to help heal & remineralise the tooth. Taking a combination of Calc Phos, Calc Flour and Silica can help to strengthen & heal the teeth. Brushing with a remineralising toothpaste/toothpowder will also help the tooth. If you are too late and the tooth needs to be filled then you can take the following remedies. Ledum This will help to heal the site of the numbing injection. Arnica This remedy will reduce any swelling and inflammation in the mouth and kick-start the healing process. Hypericum Hypericum will assist in alleviating any pain following treatment. Extractions On occasion, the tooth cannot be saved and we are left with the option of extraction. Again, Ledum, Arnica & Hypericum can be used for the same purposes as above. Calendula This will speed healing & reduce the risk of infection in the gum following extraction. Ruta Grav Should you develop dry socket following your extraction, this remedy, in conjunction with Calendula, will alleviate pain and heal the gum. Abscess An abscess is a collection of pus that has formed within the tooth, the gum or the bone. It can be incredibly painful. Because the lymphatic system around the teeth is a closed system, once an infection gets in there it can flourish. This is normally treated by your dentist with antibiotics. There are some remedies that will help eliminate the abscess. Hepar Sulph This is known as the homeopath’s lance and is an amazing remedy when there is a build up of infection that needs to be eliminated. Belladonna Bell. Is a useful remedy for abscesses when there is a lot of heat an inflammation around the affected tooth/gum. It will generally be very painful, throbbing, also. Silica Silica is an amazing elimination remedy. It helps the body rid itself of anything that doesn’t belong there. This is mainly used with abscesses that are draining but refusing to heal. Gum Disease Gum disease has a number of causes; hormonal changes, poor dental routine, weakened immune system to name but a few. Luckily, there are remedies on hand to help. Mercurius solubilis Gums bleed, teeth loosen, they get decayed even after filling. Phosphorus Colour of teeth changes, they become hollow; bleeding from the gums. Silica Infection of the gums. Sweat on head and feet and the abdomen may become distended. Carbo veg Gums spongy, recedes, bleed easily. Toothache from hot, cold or salty food. Broken, chipped or knocked out teeth If you have an accident that causes any damage to your teeth it’s vital to go to a dentist as soon as possible. Use Arnica, Hypericum & Calendula to speed healing following dental treatment. Sensitive Teeth and Referred Pain These are both constitutional issues which are best addressed by your homeopath. In these instances, these are symptoms of something else that needs to be addressed in the body. Proper constitutional care will redress the imbalance in your system and allow healing to take place. Treatment may take place over a series of appointments at which you will be prescribed a remedy which most closely matches your symptoms. Whatever your dental ailment, homeopathy can help! In a case like this a homeopath would require a full history/picture of the client. There is much to be considered in a case like this (how long they have been in situ, why they were implanted, any issues surrounding them, the vitality of the client, etc.) before being able to make a judgement.
